AEROSIL® 200 is an extremely fine and lightweight fumed silica powder used to thicken epoxy, polyester and other compatible resins.
It is ideal when resin is too runny and needs to stay in place. Add a small amount to make resin thicker, reduce dripping and create anything from a slightly thicker mix to a non-sag adhesive or repair paste.
Where is it useful?
- Thickening epoxy and polyester resin
- Vertical and overhead repairs
- Epoxy bonding and gap filling
- Making epoxy fillets and corner radiuses
- Composite and mould repairs
- Gelcoat and coating applications
- Helping reduce settling of pigments and fillers
- Resin art and decorative epoxy
- Stone carpet, decorative aggregate, steps and vertical edges
How to use
Add AEROSIL® gradually while mixing. Start with a small amount and increase until the required consistency is reached. Even a small change in quantity can significantly change how thick the resin becomes.
For epoxy systems, it is usually convenient to mix AEROSIL® into the resin before adding the hardener. Always keep the original resin-to-hardener ratio specified by the resin manufacturer.
Important: There is no universal dosage. Different resin systems react differently, so always make a small test batch first.
Typical applications
Epoxy fillets: Turn runny laminating epoxy into a paste that stays in a corner.
Vertical repairs: Reduce resin running down walls, edges or composite parts.
Bonding: Create a thicker, more gap-filling adhesive consistency.
Stone carpet: Thicken the resin binder for steps, edges, risers and other areas where normal resin may drain away.
Technical information
- Type: Hydrophilic fumed silica
- Appearance: Very fine white powder
- Surface area: approx. 200 m²/g
- BET range: 175–225 m²/g
- SiO₂ content: >99.8%
- Main function: Thickening, anti-sag and reduced settling
Please note: AEROSIL® changes the consistency of the resin. It does not by itself make a resin UV-resistant, waterproof, stronger or suitable for outdoor use. These properties depend on the resin system being used.
AEROSIL® 200 is extremely light, so even a small weight occupies a surprisingly large volume. Add carefully to avoid creating airborne dust.
